Becoming a mature student: self employment and paying tax?

I became self employed in September 08, and submitted my first tax return in April 09. However, next month ( Sept 09 ) I will become a mature student ( studying full-time ). It’s possible that I may try to continue working for myself on weekends ( providing the work is there of course) but I'd like to know what I should do if I don’t continue to work - is there any obligation to inform HM Revenue that I am no longer working for myself and that I've become a full-time student? Also are there any problems / implications for NI contributions?
Thanks for any advice offered.

  • Yes you will need to tell HMRC - if you finish part way through the year there is space on your tax return to put the date you stopped being self employed. Or I would ring them and let them know. Same with the NI people.
