Temperamental teeth!

Hi, although I don't have toothache right now, I noticed there seem to be a few dentists on here so I thought I'd ask..

Do you have any patients like me? I have the most awful teeth, so much so that I feel embarrassed when I phone my dentist simply because I have to do it so often! I'm sure they think I'm some weirdo who likes dentists!!

I've had severe toothache often in the past, I never leave the house without strong painkillers in case it returns. A few years ago my dentist extracted 3 teeth looking for the one causing the problem! At my last check up I had to have 3 fillings & I've had to return 3 times since then -1 front tooth chip, 1 hole and 1 filling dropped out, this is all within 3 months! And this goes on year after year.

I've had regular 6 monthly check up since my very first teeth, they are brushed daily & I don't smoke.

Could my teeth be so bad because I use asthma pumps or because I don't eat dairy food?At this rate I won't have any left!:o

TIA

Has anyone ever investigated the possibility of you clenching/grinding your teeth at night?
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Er No - I'm pretty sure i don't do that though. The damage usually occurs when I eat - my teeth just crumble & bits break off.

That may well be when the damage shows itself, but unless you're eating bolts that won't be when the damage is caused.

Doesn't affect the teeth. The bones would suffer before teeth would if there was any calcium deficiency. So if you've not got ricketts, your teeth aren't short of calcium.

lack of dairy has no effect -unless you are a growing child. What is your diet like? the main cause of decay is too frequent ingestion of sugary foods/drinks -especially sugar in tea/coffee or general snacking on foods that contain sugar.
The recent crop of fillings being replaced could just be coincidence. If you had a load done years ago, it could just be that they are at the end of their life span.

You're not bulaemic by any chance?
  • I am guilty of being a food picker, little and often rather than meals and there's probably more sugar than I realise. It's not really a recent thing, even as a child i was forever having fillings.

I'm definatley not bulimic, quite phobic about being sick:o

Probably take after my mother who had all her teeth removed by her mid 30's:eek:

Little and often is a sure fire way to destroy your teeth, its not the amount of sugar thats important so much as the frequency. If you "graze" you keep the bacteria well fed and the pH low enough for long enough to cause decay at a fast rate.
