Complete a form P87 for the last tax year.

You can claim relief on the tax, on tools that you have been required to purchase for work.

If its your first claim then expect to have have to supply receipts and possibly proof of usage for the tools (if your a mechanic, don't try and claim for a lawn mower.)

you claim back the tax that you have paid on the money you spent on the tools
assuming you are a basic rate taxpayer, basically you will get back £20 for every £100 you spent

There is a fixed rate expense allowance for mechanics. Search for fixed rate expense allowance at www.hmrc.gov.uk. You can claim this allowance for up to 6 yrs if you were doing that job all that time.
If you are replacing tools to the value of more than this allowance, you can claim tax relief for the difference on production of receipts. You need to ask HMRC for a payable order if claiming for past years, not a code change for this year.
