    Thankyou very much for your help ccp and chocclare. Do you know where you can get cheaper lentils. I got some from asda and they only had organic ones, i got the green ones, they were 98p. Will aldi sell them cheaper.

    I usually use split red lentils as they "dissolve" easiest - I got mine from Tesco's last time. Like I say, I usually use a couple of handfuls in a ragu, so they do last - I don't think they're cheaper than Asda though.

    The cheapest place I've found for lentils is my local Asian supermarket - I bought a huge bag of red ones for about £1 last year, and I still haven't finished them! Spices are cheap in there, too - that's one of the reasons I have so many. :o

    When I make bolognese or chilli I use one tin of tomato plus the same amount of stock - it's less sweet and a bit more, er, subtle. Also cheaper, I guess!
