Smelly milk container in fridge

I need to sort this one because it's driving me mad.

I drink skimmed milk and buy it in cartons (UHT) at supermarkets. I then pour it into a jug because the cartons don't sit tight in my fridge door.

I keep getting a smell from the container I store the milk in despite trying several. I've used different plastic ones (one is new and says will not leave smells!). I've even tried pouring the milk into a washed & emptied plastic container that rest of family's semi-skimmed milk comes in and that smells too once it's had skimmed milk in it.

A glass jug is out of the question because I've already shattered one.

It's not a case of the milk going "off" either because we use a carton full every day so it's only there for just over 24 hours. Thanks in advance.

  • you may have already covered this one but have you cleaned the inside of the door shelf where the milk sits?we just use standard milk but i often find that my DH has slopped it all over the place...therefore creating a bit of a nasty wiff if not cleaned up straight away. You'll find this even if it has just dribbled down the side of the jug.

    Worth a go!
  • Try rinsing the container with Bicarb after you wash it and let it dry on the drainer it might help

I get a slight smell from my milk which is stored in the plastic cartoon it comes in, but if it really bothers you use a different container other than plastic. Ceramic, glass or a metal such as aluminum. Old Milk churns were made from aluminium and they kept the milk fresh and cool.

....and make sure there's a good tight lid.

.....on second thoughts, a flask would probably be ideal.

Tried the Bicarb, thanks and so far so good. I'll give it another day and if its smelly I might try the Miltons.

Glass is out of question because I'm rather clumsy and have a tiled kitchen floor! Lost one that way last week and did it FLY!!
