Pension fund during career break?

OK, I had been paying into the USS pension scheme - university lecturers scheme. I have now left the university with the aim of going travelling for a while, lets say a year. I can leave my pension money where it is with USS and transfer it later but it will not be 'doing anything' while there. Would it be worth my while transfering it to some private pension scheme that is related to investments? I won't be paying anything into it during my career break so I don't really know what I am allowed to open regarding pension schemes. There is not much in my pension fund, something like £3000 or £5000.
Any advice?
Many thanks

have you thought of this.
If you go back to another public sector job, you may be able to transfer your USS benefits into your new employers scheme via the public sector transfer club. IME this will give you the same number of years in the new employers scheme as you had in the old. Assuming your new salary is higher, this is a good deal for you.
If you are only travelling for a year, I would think its probably more prudent to leave the money where it is and see what your new employers pension scheme is before making any decisions.
