Exempt from council tax

I've been told today by a council worker friend of mine that if we were to go into a rented house (which we are doing) we would still need to pay the council tax of 'our' house which is in the hands of the OR.
Now i've been looking a the council tax documents and it state under execptions that:
'dwellings where the liable person is a trustee in bankruptcy' are exempt.
Is this me and my husband?
If we do have to pay for the council tax is it something I can arrange with the oR to allow us extra money to pay for both sets of council taxes?
2 sets of council taxes, that's just unfair don't you think?

Hi MH, you need to notify the council when you vacate the house. I think you get 6 months no council tax whilst the property is vacant and then they revert back to charging, hopefully by then it will no longer be in your name. Give them a call to get things clarified.2019 MFW No. 74 £13700/£30000 (45.66%)
12k in 2018 No. 98 £6274.19/£18000 (34.85%)
BTL (start) £97440.00 (current) £68000.00
Residential (start) £275000.00 (current) £268000.000 -
Thanks iquit. That's better news anyway. I will tomorrow morning.0

No, that's not you.
Houses where a trustee is liable is when the OR has taken possession of the house because there is equity to be realised.
The OR will have no dealings with your house whatsoever until your mortgage company send them the bill for the shortfall, until that time the house and all dealings with your mortgage provider are your responsibility.
But as I quit says, you should get 6 months exemption, then a reduced rate for the house being unoccupied. This will continue until the day the house is officially repossessed.

I see, thank you both. Those 6 months will be a great help.0

after those 6 months you should get a discounted rate some councils give 50% discount others give only 10%
Thought, after the 6 months is up if the house is not repod by that time, could you not move back in? for say a month, pay 1 months council tax then move out again to get 6 months exempt. dont know if it would work or not.. but if one of you could move in saying you had 'tempory split'0 -

HTH
Nottingham councils give you 6 months exemption then charge the full amount after that unless you leave it fully furnished (50% discount if left furnished). If it's unfurnished (as mine was cos my furniture was in my rented house!) then you have to pay 100% council tax, they wouldn't even give me single persons discount!! Seems ludicrous to me!
Obviously might be different elsewhere though
