ITV1 Tonight: UK’s Most Thrifty
Martin Lewis is making an ITV1 Tonight programme about thrift.
As part of it. one family is going to be given a full- scale thrift makeover, showing people how to live their lives the thrifty way. The Tonight team are looking for a family who currently don't use any thrifty techniques.
What are ITV looking for?
They may tend to live a convenience lifestyle and are looking or needing to radically cut back on thrift expenditure. i.e they end up chucking quite a bit of fruit and veg away at the end of the week or letting the bread go mouldy? They might buy a takeaway even if there’s food in the fridge? Buy top-end cleaning products and toiletries and have a wardrobe full of clothes that never get worn?
We’re keen not to confuse people with thrift with money saving. Money saving is about cutting bills without cutting back and playing the system. Thrift is money saving Old Style, it's about changing your lifestyle too - reusing, growing and making things e.g. re-using old wrapping paper, it's a more radical change.
The aim of the show
The aim is to turn you into a thrifty family that saves you hundreds of pounds and transforms your family’s attitude towards waste into ‘make do and mend’.
