Late Payment charges

Been with empire stores catalogue for over 12 years, and recently missed a payment due to goods which were on buy now pay later and forgot about them. Empire have charged me £15 for the late payment. I emailed them explained the situation, but they wont refund the charges. I have threatened the leave them (which I will) if they dont refund.
Whats the situation on these charges? Can they charge them, do you have to pay them?

Might be worth asking them to refund it. I recently wrote a letter to another company, and had a reply today saying that they will refund my £15 as a gesture of goodwill. No harm in asking.0
