  • Hiya,
Im an aromatherapist, can also do hpoi and head massage and had the full intention of going it alone just as you want to. However, it takes so long to build up a stable client base, oils are expensive, especially when you dont have the start up to buy in bulk, insurance isnt cheap either.
You do get a lot of men expecting a sexual service, even when you advertise that you are clearly not (as another poster stated previously), you need to cover a large area especially if you are in an area where it is a competitive service. If you can get in with a local gym or similar where they will allow you a regular spot then this is a good way to get started.
Advertising is expensive also, and to be honest most of your business will come from word of mouth.
Another option is working within a local beauty therapists, where you will remain self employed and work your own hours, just rent a room from them and they handle most of the advertising for you, book your appointments etc, you just pay a flat rate for the hire of room etc.
If you are willing to work hard, just like with every business, and make sure you are good at it (being ok simply wont do, you have to make the clients feel like you have the hands of an angel or they will just go elsewhere or write off any further massage at all in the furture, feeling it doesnt work for them) then you can do well in time.
You also need to make sure you are very fit, as its hard work standing on your feet all day giving massage, youd be suprised how much it can take out of you!
    HTH and good luck

    Hi
Im doing massage therapy as part of my HNC Beauty course. We also have the choice to do reflexology etc in the future. Apparently the whole complementary therapies is becoming really really popular.

Im hoping after my HNC that I can go onto uni and do my honours degree in either reflexology or aromatherapy.

There is definetley a calling for massages - i asked one person to be a guinea pig for me and i was inundated with offers lol. I asked for a donation of a couple of quid to put towards oil etc so that I wasn't doing myself out of money. Dont know what it will be like when I qualify tho.
  • I would think carefully about moving into this field at the current time, the market is full of therapits (I am one myself!). I have been going for 4 years but never make enough money to replace a full time income and this year has been really bad.

I think if you live in a more affluent area it may be help in someways as there is more disposable income.
