Help!

Hi, new on the site but would be very grateful for any advice.

I'm in about £15,000 in debt and was contacted by the debt recovery agency today. They were pretty demanding and I explained that I had tried to repay the outstanding balance but because of mental health problems and an eating disorder, I wasn't able to do this.

I am training to be a teacher at the moment but they had said that if I recieve a CCJ then I wouldn't be able to teach. Is this right? I'm very upset at the moment and it really is pushing me to the edge. I'm 22 and in so much debt. I still live with my parents and I'm worrying that Baliffs can take my parents assets. I only hope that this is not true.

If anyone could help with any advice then I will be very grateful.

Kind Regards.

NO! Don't listen to such nonsense!
A CCJ will in no way affect your ability to become a teacher.
Please, in the first instance stop worrying about this as it will stop you sorting everything else out.
Have you been to Citizen's Advice at all? It sounds like you are being harrassed.
Welcome to the boards, you will find lots of advice and friendly ears here :)

  • Thank you for your reply-I really appreciate it. No I haven't been to the Citizen's Advice...can they offer any support for this sort of problem? I do want to pay back the money I owe but they were really asking for the total amount in full which I simply cannot do. Do you know whether they can take assets from my parents house?

Thank you again for your reply.

Hello and welcome. I would like to suggest that you seek professional advice from the debt charities eg CCC, national debtline and CABS. They will give you the info you need to make a plan of action. This forum is also full of very helpful supportive people. CCJ/ bankruptcy will not stop you from becoming a teacher. Debt recovery agencies can use underhanded methods to pressure people into making payments they can't afford (disclaimer note:allegedly).

They can't take anything that doesn't belong to you and it sounds like you are a long way off any sort of bailiff action.
Have you spoken to your parents about your predicament?

  • You see how easy it is for them to intimidate people! They rely on folk not knowing anything! Pathetic! Good job for forums like these

As already said, no it wont stop you being a teacher and they are just trying it on, when they call again just tell them that you have had advice and you are doing your best to pay, plenty of places to go to for advice, as said CAB, also CCCS, CLA, Nat Debt line - give you peace of mind

  • Thank you for your messages. I will contact the debt agencies and visit the CAB tomorrow.

My mum does know about my debt and said that she would help if she could, but I don't want her to as it is my problem. It is better though, her knowing about how much debt I'm in...she is very supportive.

I'm so glad I've come across this site as I feel so much calmer now.

    Thank you again.
  • Thank you feelingfoolish. I will seek as much advice as I can and you are right, I am so glad that I've come across this site.

    Kind Regards.
