Im quite young and inexpieranced workwise (3 years working) and I was advised to Joing the Union by the rep at work however when I asked my supervisor about it, he said it was a waste of money unless I was a troublemaker I'd not need the unions services. What are the pros and cons of joining a union?

If my postman had delivered election material for the BNP I would have held him personally responsible for pushing the filth through my letter box as he had personally elected to do it.

As for them just being another political party; go and read up. You might want to start here. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8644741474

The supervisor is Management, he would say that. Unions are not about trouble making they are about defending workers rights. When you have a supervisor expressing an anti opinion rather than a neutral opinion, I think it is time to join.

Well, he would say that wouldn't he. It means that if you were in trouble it would be alot easier to get rid of you without anyone trained to do so, arguing your case.

I was management in a large organisation, and I knew how some managers worked/behaved. I didn't end my union membership when I was promoted and used to actively encourage all new staff to join up; because if they had BEEN ACCUSED of something, by another member of staff or a customer, and I had to investigate it, I wanted someone trained to do so, to act on their behalf. Even if it meant going head to head with me in the disciplinary.
  • please join. I always used to believe that if you worked hard & did a good job you would have no problems- experience & age have changed my views to my cost. You will have the correct legal advice.Of course your manager will tell you not to join as they dont want you to have the extra help. However nice you think they are the management will screw you over at the end of the day!
