Airing Duvets

Hi everyone,

I've just brought us all new duvets from Ikea ready for winter and (thanks to the preparing for winter and avoiding gas and electric threads on here) want to use the old ones under the sheets for some more warmth/comfort.
I dont really want to wash them, they wont fit in my machine anyway, I just wanted to air them out and get them smelling nicer (have been stored since easter). Without going and buying loads of frebreze stuff is there anything I can use on them to make them smell fresher or do you think just having them on the line for the day will work?
Thanks.

Seconded :) - or if it's raining over the bannister (if you have one) or even over the top of a bedroom door is better than nothing. Over the airer in front of an open window .

On the continent they hang them out of the bedroom windows in the morning.

I agree, fresh air is the best freshener, and it's free;)
  • Its going to be a lovely day here tomorrow so will put them out first thing for the whole day. Thanks for the replies.

My neighbour and I do this ! It does freshen them up and you dont need to carry them downstairs to put them on the line!
Sometimes they end up on the pavement when it is windy but most of my windows are sashes so I can use them to hold them.

Duvets smell lovely when hung out in the fresh air. In the winter though I hang them over the bannisters. I don't usually make the beds early...I pull the duvets off, hang them up then let the beds air for a couple of hours.

The other thing to do is if you're storing them for any length of time put a tumble drier sheet in the bag with them.

  • Just a comment - I read on the " what worked last winter" thread that putting duvets as an under warmer made them go manky with the body heat.

Ooh, thx mrs thrifty. Thats one thread I've not read yet..that'll be my mission for tonight as I've made enough jam the past 2 days to last years (altho as my youngest DS ate half a pot before breakfast it might not do!).
I'm sure I could find another use for them if that is the case, if only the filling stuff.

last year i put duvets on the matteress i didn't have any go manky, but every week when i changed the bedding i took the duvet off and hung it over side of bed or on airer for a few hours to let it air, also hung on line if a nice windy day. so maybe this helped and stopped them going manky.

Hi, what a useful thread. I washed a sinlge in WM but double wont fit and really needs more than an airing (two years at uni:o)
Does anyone know if I could wash it at a launderette - would they have bigger tubs? If so how much would the wash cost?
I would choose a sunny day and line dry it
    Many thanks
