Bookkeeping, Accounts... How to get started...

My wife has set up as a sole trader recently. She has a part-time job and currently doesn't earn enough to pay tax. She has informed the IR that she has set up in addition to her job and they are sending her on a course tomorrow. She has a couple of months of accounts under her belt at the moment but of course there are questions that we don't know the answer to and would like to know with regards to tax, bookkeeping and accounting.

Does anyone know of any good books or resources that we could look at? I have a bookkeeping guide from about 8 years ago but I don't want to digest that as I suspect it is out of date. Didn't self-assessment come in around that time?

Any help would be appreciated to point us in the right direction.

Thanks

Self assessment has been in since 1995, but this has nothing to do with book keeping, the basics of which were laid down in the 16th century. The course tomorrow will help her, but unless she has a very complicated business, I can't see that she will need to do double entry book keeping. A simple cash book should be enough.
HMRC will give her handouts on completing a self assessment and Business Link are also helpful.
