Las Vegas to Los Angeles - where to stop?

In April went to California and had a wicked time. Now we are thinking about our next trip. Definately want to go back to Santa Monica and was thinking about starting at Vegas and then driving to LA. Been to vegas before but only went on the strip and now want to look around.

Can anyone suggest an area to stop for a few days on the way to either LA or San Diego, we will have a 3 year old with us.
