Help ! Lentil problem

I have made lentil soup for the first time and used red lentils from the packet.

Only thing is I forgot to wash them before I added them to the soup !
Will the soup either be posioned or unable to be eaten ?
I used up loads of veg in it so do hope its not ruined.
It looks a really yucky colour .
Any advice really appreciated, thanks

I would think that they will be okay as they are being boiled anyway. If the soup is just on, they will look kind of cloudy for a long while. It will be a good hour and a half before they mush up anyway.

They end up a real light orange/yellow colour. Make sure you have seasoned the soup and an onion always perks things up, whatever you are cooking. HTH x

    Oh thanks for your advice.
Yes the soup does look really cloudy, but I will just cook it longer then.
Ho hum ! there was me thinking how I was being a little moneysaver and getting stuff done by making an extra large batch of soup

I`m sure if you leave it to simmer for a while longer it will be fine. I never rinse my lentils / split peas and I`ve never killed anyone in all the years I`ve been feeding the family. :D not yet anyway !!

Another one here who doesn't wash them, and I cook lots of lentil soup - so far, so good! I am sure it will be fine.

    Hi Cat,

I've never washed lentils before cooking either and it's never done us any harm. If you simmer over a medium heat, red lentils should be cooked in under an hour and will disappear into your soup while thickening it and giving it a lovely flavour. Oh I fancy a bowl of lentil soup now! :D

Well back in the old days it was recommended you wash lentils because they came in a sack (the grocer weighed them out for you) and they were covered in dust.

You were also recommended to "pick" lentils...that is pour them onto a white plate and sort through them for tiny stones before you cooked the lentil. anyone who has chomped down on a yiny stone while eating soup knows what this is all about!

But...that was decades ago. If you buy prepacked lentils from the supermarket then they'll be fine.
