Appear at the court and when they tell you the names of the persons involved in the case, say you think that you recognise the name from somewhere. You can't do jury duty if you know who is involved

You might find that this particular corner of the net isn't a free speech forum and posts very much can be censored. Martin's board, Martin's rules.

I think I will need to spell this out. The two comments were to show you contradicting yourself. Please note that I do NOT agree with you !

Quite so Fifer, in fact I removed the offending post due to this rule by Martin.

    Note from Martin:

It’s my aim to make this a great place to be for people to chat about saving money and build a MoneySaving community, free from nasty comments, sales techniques, people driven by profit, advertising and confusion. These rules have been designed to help that. Yet remember this is a privately owned site. Posting is a privilege, not a right. Any posts or anyone that threatens the site’s resources or makes it a worse place to be will be stopped appropriately solely at the discretion of MoneySavingExpert.com with or without reasons given.

An update on where I am now:

I 'phoned the Clerk of the Court and told them that I was required at work for the next three months as I am heavily involved in the current product launch.

I was told to write in with that information, and have included a letter from my current client confirming the above.

It was stressed, though, that any concession is discretionary, so there's no gaurantee that this will get me out of doing jury service (although it may delay it somewhat).

Most of the suggestions here would likely lead to charges for contempt of court - lying to the court probably isn't the best course of action.

To the original poster - or anyone else who finds themselves in a similar situ....

You probably responded to a letter informing you that you had been chosen for inclusion on a 'roster' for jury service -it may have been some time ago.

Now it may not be ethical, but I chose to ignore the last one I got after having been called twice in the last 6 years [serving once for five days on a High Court jury] and losing money because my employer didn't have a 'company stamp' with which to complete the claim form [it was a new business start-up and everything was chaotic].

I got a letter back saying that they could not process my claim as not all sections had been completed properly ... 'if you wish to query this decision ... blah ... blah ... blah'.
I phoned and was told that unless I could provide proof of loss of earnings 'in the manner described' then there was nothing they could do.

So ... if you receive a letter telling you, you have been chosen and it asks you to return an acknowledgment ..... don't - just bin it - it must have been misdelivered - lost in the post or you don't recall receiving it ..... that way your name won't go forward for selection.
    However .....
If you have been sent a letter with a date to attend ..... then you must go or they will ask local plod to find out why you didn't - just make sure you can claim successfully - or - say you think you may recognise someone in the dock [you will be specifically asked this] from somewhere but can't be sure [be vauge], they won't want to risk a mis-trial.

Well, my client wrote a letter saying that my absence would be detrimental to the business for the next three months.

The result is that I have been excused from Jury Service until 1st August 2006 - no doubt I'll get a letter at that point asking me to attend.

shirking work, shirking jury duty.... maybe he could try working for a living?
do you automaticly assume everybody on benifits dont work? you really need to look at the wider picture. I am on benifits, but on carers allowance, does that mean i should stop caring for my mother and get a "proper" job? What about my mother who is on DLA, should she get a proper job even although she is blind? think before you type is my advice.

Hi someone I know who is on VERY limited money has been called up too.
What he needs to know is do they pay expenses upfront?

it is going to cost him roughly 6 pound a day return bus fare, and being on benefits he is not going to be able to afford the travel costs upfront for more than 2 days if he is chosen!!

Thanks in advance of any replies
If i was him i would explain to them that he just does not have the money to get to the court on a daily basis and if they can help. His local DSS office should be of assistance in this matter.
