in Cutting tax
Hi, I hope this is in the correct place.
DH filled in his tax assessment on line on 27 April. We had heard nothing so called two weeks ago. A week later a refund was paid in to our bank account but it was less than half of the figure I was expecting. We received no letter/ statement to explain so called again. Told the adviser that I thought there had been a mistake and rather than refer it back to be looked at again she just sent out a statement with the wrong decision on it.
How do I get the Inland Revenue to look at this again asap as I need the correct statement for my son's ema.
Don't really want to complain formally is there an appeals route? The statement didn't have any info regarding this. DH works 12 hour shifts and can't phone himself and despite sending letters giving them permission to speak to me the tax office refuse to do so unless he is there.
Any advice would be gratefully received

It is some time since I had to fill in an online tax return, but when I did, it told me the amount of tax payable/repayable at the end of the process. Are you saying the refund is different from this? (If you didn't keep a paper copy of the return, can you check online?)Mortgage, draw down Sept 2014: £222,000
Now: £173,2290 -
If you have received less refund than you thought you were due, then presumably you have calculated your liability yourself. You need to conatct HMRC and go through your calculation line by line to see where it differs from your and get them to correct theirs if it is wrong.
There is no appeals procedure - one of you has got your sums wrong and you need to cmpare notes to sort it out.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -

Two things spring to mind here. Since your DH filed online himself then no-one at HMRC had anything to do with it after that so no error could have been attributed to them. The online filing system should have told him immediately what tax had been overpaid and if he had disagreed he should have looked again at the figures he had input on the computer. It would also have generated a full calculation which he would have been invited to print off.
Also since no overpaid tax was returned within a couple of weeks of filing online that would lead me to assume that your DH did not tick the relevant box when he filed online to indicate that he wanted any overpaid tax returned to him.
However it is not too late to sort this out. Have a look at the printed calculation your DH should have printed off when he finished filing online and check the figures. If you don't have one then your DH should make an appointment at your local HMRC enquiry centre and staff there will look at it for you and help you with any corrections needed. He would need to bring his books and receipts etc with him to help sort this out. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
