Clip top preserving jars

Okay silly question time - but....er......I've just gone to put the lid onto a clip top preserving jar and realised I dont know how to:confused:

Does the rubber ring thingie go on the base of the jar or the lid?

Does the "sticking-out bit" (ie like the "ring" is "sticking its tongue out" IYSWIM) face the hinge end of the lid or the other end?

I've taken a wild guess and fitted it onto the lid bit and with the "tongue" bit sticking out the hinge side of the lid and hoped I got it right:o

Well....I did say it would be a silly question.......

(heres hoping the contents come out okay - I've followed what turned out to be a rather vague "recipe" for sloe gin - as in:
- !!!!! sloes
- place sloes and equal amount of sugar in bottle (hence the use of one of these jars - in order to have a wide enough neck)
- top up with gin nearly to top (bought a small bottle of gin and discovered that means it just came to about 1" from the top - hoping that doesnt matter).

The "recipe" didnt say it was necessary to sterilise the "bottle" - so I'm presuming it isnt - thinking "oh well....alcohol must be good for sterilising things anyway".

I hope I actually LIKE sloe gin at the end of all this - any idea on how long I should leave it before removing the top and seeing if I do?

That sounds like what I do :) I put the rubber ring on the top and just have the lip to one side, as it gets in the way if it's at the front or the back. I'm sure there's an 'official' way of doing it but I've never had a problem doing it my way.
