Goodwill club

i just bought a raffle ticket for £3 off a woman who came to the door for "Goodwill Childrens Cancer co". I know my oh has bought a ticket from them in the past, so I bought one for him as he's not here. Anyway, just had a look at the ticket, and there's no charity number/anything, except an address in Grangemouth. Anyone know anything about this lot? I have a strong suspicion Ive just been ripped off.

Hmm...sounds a bit dodgy, but that is just my gut instinct.

Last night a lady came to the door selling air freshners for some children's charity. My DH politely said no..and she seemed quite huffed.

I NEVER give money away at the door, only through proper collection boxes or through appeals through the year. i.e Children in Need, Comic Relief etc

I used to put out my old bric and brac and clothes to the Moonbeam charity people (EDINBURGH) but they were exposed as slightly fraudulent I believe. So now I stick to giving it to the charities I know and trust.

I hope that the people that came to you were genuine.

Maybe get in touch with these people?

I have a feeling genuine charity raffles etc have to have the charity number on them. We get quite a few door to door sellers who when you look into it are private companies - can get quite arsy when refused. Also we get leaflets asking for secondhand clothes, goods etc to be left in a bag on the doorstep. Implies it goes to Eastern European charities but when you read the small print its just a private company so presumably they sell the stuff on. Always worth reading the small print if you can but it's easy to be caught unawares.

Thanks for the replies - I'd click your thanks buttons, but, you know....

Definately feeling like I've been ripped off. Will have a look at the oscr website tomorrow.

I dont usually buy at the door either, but I was kind of caught off guard, and as I said, OH has bought them in the past. I've just moved house, and dont have my "NO REPS" sign up yet.

I'm getting better at saying no because I have a couple of standing orders giving to charity and I feel that if I give to those two on a regular basis it means that it's easier to refuse the others. We can't donate to every charity that asks us now because there's too many.

Thats true, new leaf, there are too many charities asking for money.

I dont have a problem with saying "no thanks" to people rattling tins in shopping centres, etc - but I always look at the tin, and I always give to particular cancer charities. Then you've got the people who pack your bags when you go to the supermarket - Its hard to say no to them, as they've done something for you (despite the fact you didnt ask them to!)

Pretty sure I'll not be buying a raffle ticket at the door again, though...

I had a man at door today from this supposed charity, I couldn't find anything on web search except these details of a company. This does sound like a con.

Thanks Puma. Its like these bags/leaflets that come through the door asking for your old clothes/bedlinen, etc so they can SELL (!!) them in 3rd world countries. Just cos they have a registered company number, doesnt mean they are a charity - but some people must be misled by them.

Anyway, feeling dead pleased with myself, as I had a guy at the door last night asking me to buy a brochure thing - and I said "sorry - I dont buy at the door". He didnt appear to be narked about it.
