help - in a panic

Hi there I really need some help here!
As a teenager I was a bit daft with credit cards etc but things got silly when my ex fiance ran up a lot of debt in my name and convinced me to take a bank loan I couldn't really afford and then disappeared when I waqs away one night leaving me with all the debts and a flat to pay for etc etc. Things got very bad and I was suicidal......
Some years on I live with my friend and my daughter (9mnths old) following the death of my infant son in 2007.
I just had a very angry text from a boyfriend I had when I was 20 (I am 27) saying he's had a letter at his Mum's house from Tower Investigation and something to do with baliffs. He's really angry at me, I'm really upset and paniced - I can only get their 0800 number on answerphone.
I don't know what this is or what to do - I'm having a row with the council at the moment because they sent a collection agent letter for my council tax that should have been covered my a benefit while I'm on maternity and before I start uni (I was made redundant when pregnant). I don't think it's to do with that but my ex fiance has run up debt in my name befpre today!
What should I do?

You should never call always write, ask they what the debt is inrelation to but under no circustances admit to any debt in a letter.0

If HE has had a letter at HIS mums house, what has it got to do with you.
Tell him to sling his hook and change your mobile phone numbermake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
well, he's a friend (although I'm doubting that given his tone) and he lives there and says he's 'protecting' them.
He says i have to go pick it up off him although I asked him to post it. I don't drive.0 -
Did you stay at any time at his mums house?
If not then the bailiffs shouldn't be going there.
Is it possible for him to forward on the letter so you can see it or scan it in and email it to you?
I think tower investigation are a debt collectors rather than a bailiff organisation so there may be a good chance that the debt is statute barred anyway. Has there been a period of 6 years where no payment has been made to the debt and you have sent no letters to acknowledge the debt?
Might be worthwhile checking your credit file - free at experian if you cancel within 30 daysAfter falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

i stayed at his mum'sfor 6 months. the debt from my fiance was after i went out with this lovely fella and that is now paid off.
I asked him to post me the letter and he said i should come to get it which i'd rather not do (bus-train-bus with a baby, across the dales).0 -
So is the debt his or yours.
Is the letter in his name or yoursmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I have no idea what debt they are chasing but it's addressed to me apparently. My debt nightmares happened AFTER I lived there.0

Right, if its a in your name he should not have opened it, he should have forwarded it straight onto you. Or returned it to sender marked 'not at this address. It can be a criminal offence to open someone elses mail.
If its a debt from more than 6 years ago and you have not acknowledged the debt then it is statute barred and is unenforceable.
Get the letter forwarded to you. Dont let him bully you into going to get it, its in his interests to post it on to you. The longer he leaves it the less he is 'protecting' his family so just tell him to forward it and you will deal with it and come back on here for advice and/or template letters.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Thanks for the advice I'm really upset and shaken. After all the hassle I had in the past with my lovely ex fiance this sort of thing terrifies me. I actually threw up earlier and had a little cry!
I would just ignore it all together but this lad and his parents live in the tiny village my parents do so I can't avoid them! He's being really horrid about it as though I've done something to him personally on purpose.0 -
Stop worrying, your stress is transferred to baby, deal with it when you get it.
And tell your mum and dad, let them do some 'protecting'
