A question for Toothsmith

I have a crown on my front tooth since 1998.

Since last year I have had a painless swelling of the gum at the join behind the tooth, so thankfully it doesn't show and it hasn't spread.

I brush and floss regularly. I also use a dental stick. When cleaning, I accidently burst the swelling and it bled, then it swells up again.

I have been to a dentist and he is mystified by it.

I was wondering if you had any idea what it was?

Many thanks:)

There are several things it could be. But I'd need to see it and go through a process in order to eliminate things that it isn't in order to come up with what it is.

Just giving you a list here wouldn't really be helpful, as it would run from gingivitis all the way up to cancer and scare you stupid, as people always assume the worst! It almost certainly isn't that nasty - my bet would be on some sort of infection.

Being 'mystified' isn't really helpful. What is your dentist doing to diagnose it properly?

I assume he's taken x-rays? If he can't find a cause, he needs to refer you on to someone who can.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

He filed the tooth down on the tooth below it, it thinking it was going into the gum. It hasn't had any effect. He took an x-ray and was still mystified.

What should I do now? My next check up is due in November

Go back, and ask for a referral - probably to an oral surgeon at your local hospital.

This sounds very like a chronic infection, which isn't serious, but it should be identified and treated - either by your own dentist, or by someone who isn't so mystified.
