Martin,
I couldn't agree more with this blog. I am someone who researches anything I am going to buy (usually to the death) but my family are terrible at this and normally go for the item the salesman recommends or the one they like the look of in the shop.
Only last week my brother rang me from P.C. World saying he was about to buy a computer and was an xxx processor any good (he doesn’t have a clue on electrical goods). I immediately told him to get out of there quick and come see me and we'll research a good deal for what he needs it for. 20 mins later he was at the checkout with a trolley load of stuff he didn’t need which the sales guy had talked him into buying. When I asked why he did it he said because it was there and ready to take home. Oh dear - not worth £100's in my opinion!!!

Hi Martin,
I love the incentive of encouraging your sis to spend her money wisely... I am very impulsive and if I see something that I want yet dont understand then I just 'have to have it' - I think some of that impulse comes from a lack of knowledge and of course the excitement of wanting something with that 'wow factor'..... My dad has always been the one who has kept my feet on the ground, often pointed out things that were wrong and given me help and advice.... At the time I felt like sulking cos I couldnt have my toy so stuck my bottom lip out good and proper but how grateful was I afterwards when I realised how valuable his help was!!! These days I love getting a bargain and not being ripped off!!
This is one of the reasons that I love this site, that it teaches me that it is possible to get a good deal, so not only could your sis have that laptop she wanted, she could possible get one somewhere else with a better spec, a free gizmo whatsit with it and still enough change to get a mac donalds!
You can't put an old head on young shoulders its true but you can bribe em to see what they need to see!!grin! good one Martin!
p.s. I am thinking of buying a laptop, if I am a good girl and research really hard can I have £50 too???Official DFW Nerd 2100 -
I fix computers by advertising in my local paper. I was called out to a house to fix their 12 year old's PC. The mum said her daughter had saved up £400 to buy it herself. When I examined it I found that it had be "hand build" by someone who had told her dad "he could do it cheaper than the big computer companies". Result - No documentation, No system software, Illegal copy of Windows and no licence.
Lesson. Learn about what it is you're buying0
