Just another DFW saying thanks...!

Hi everyone

I originally started a thread in the loans section but didn't get much interest (poor me...!) but I did want to post this again in the DFW section as I have found so much inspiration in here over the last couple of weeks...
to be honest, I never believed that my debt was a big problem - I earn a decent salary, live with my boyfriend and just pay him a v.small amount of rent each month (he owns the house) and have never defaulted on any payments... HOWEVER, when I decided to apply for a loan to buy a new car and got refused I thought I better take another look at everything! needless to say, I realised that, although "manageable", my debt is not good!!! Ideally, I'd like to buy a house with my boyfriend in the next couple of years and don't want him lumbered with all my credit card debt just because I couldn't resist a few items of clothing over the last few years!

Well, I'm rambling now... but I have just (after several phone conversations/letters) been accepted for a £15,000 loan with my bank at 6.4% over three years, which although not ideal, gives me a debt free date (April 09!) to focus on and give me hope! No more credit cards - they will all be cut up and cancelled once the money comes through, just living on what I actually have in the bank each month once all the bills, etc. have gone out - I can't wait!

The plan now is to get my credit score back to good (it dropped after my unsuccessful loan application with Lombard Direct  ) and to start saving money so that, hopefully, I can pay the loan off early! (and of course when I want to do that I'll be coming back here for advice on what to do!)

So, I would like to say a big thanks to you all, and Martin!, as the various other threads I have become addicted to over the last week or so have given me invaluable advice on what steps to take to get out of my debt.

Debt-free by 28 fingers crossed (25 at moment!)

  • Good stuff.

WARNING!!!! There are many people over here who have consolidated, only to have to consolidate again a year later. You are playing a dangerous game, IF you do not cut up those cards and change your habits.

Good Luck. If you hang aroung you will learn lots and bring that DFD forward.

Didn't want to be mean, just want you to be debt free.

Thanks sanfrancisco - wise words! Yes, I will DEFINITELY be getting rid of the credit cards - I have a very wise boyfriend who will not let me get into the same situation again (he has never been in debt, bar his mortgage)... plus, coming on this site regularly should prevent any overspending I reckon! Just about to send my loan papers back now, so by the end of next week I should have cancelled all but one card which will be hidden away by my boyfriend whilst I pay it off!
