Moving Abroad

I realise that a visit to the Tax Office will be required nearer the time but was looking to see if anyone can give me a rough idea of how to deal with tax issues when moving abroad.

Unfortunately it's not me but my father who is moving to Tenerife in January but is currently self employed.

I normally deal with his tax return so will also have the worry of sorting his tax affairs out when he goes.

He could (in theory) be working until the day before he goes so given that he is going in January and his normal tax return is not due until April when do I submit his tax return? Do they just contact him at his new address at the normal time or does it need dealt with before he goes?

I would be grateful for any advice.

    As you haven't had any answers, I'll just say that in my experience, a phone call to HMRC usually gets a polite and helpful response, so I'd recommend doing that now rather than waiting until too much nearer the time!

  • Thanks , I will indeed give them a call. If only to settle my mind as to the procedure to follow nearer the time.

    I will try not to take the 'no replies' personally :confused: . I guess tax issues are pretty dull compared to most topics.

    Sorry for lack of replies but I, for one, am not around on the sitre a lot these days.

    Assuming your father is a typical "UK resident and domiciled" person his position, basically, is that for the year of departure, 2006/07, he will still be liable to tax in the UK on his worldwide income (less any foreign tax he pays on the same income).

    He will be expected to file his ususal Tax Return for the year by 31st January 2008, the usual 10 months after the end of the tax year.

    For folllwing years his liability to UK tax will depend on ...........

    > his future intentions coupled with

    > what he actually does and

    > what income he still has in the UK, if any.

    Remember that, under self assesment, it is his duty to declare income and gains correctly to the Revenue even after he has left these shores.

    Savvy_Sue's advice is good. Get the Revenue's viewpoint on this but watch out. Overseas issues are VERY complex. General tax offices don't know anything about them and shy away from giving help.

    I strongly recommend you talk it through with the Revenue's overseas specialist office, the CNR (Centre for Non Residents). Web site here .....
