It's made from Gore Tex - which is a breathable (to a certain extent) waterproof fabric - it's also expensive hence the price of the jackets. These jackets are designed for hillwalking and mountaineering (not for wearing on the high street although many do) and are suppossed to keep rain/snow out whilst letting your body's own moisture (sweat) escape - this only works to some extent and it helps if you wear other wicking non-cotton clothing underneath in layers, for example a baselayer top of Merino Wool or polartec powerdry etc and then a mid layer fleece or pertex.

If you want a cheaper alternative then try these (non Goretex) jackets from Tchibo for £24.99 :

Or these Lowe Alpine Jackets for £38:

Or if you are on a really tight budget get a Regatta one for £7!:

Of those 3 the Lowe Alpine is probably the best buy as it is a well known brand name and they make some decent stuff."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."

I completely agree with you, my partners after one as he's into cycling, the jacket he has now is foggy the berghaus is going to make him look like a complete anorak. He is older than me & I am trying to keep him looking young, but what bad taste. May as well get him an illuminous one to be a complete dork train spotter.
We've had a rowe by the way.0 -

Whatever jacket you get him, get him one of these,http://www.wiggle.co.uk/default.aspx?Cat=cycle maybe this is fashionable.
Unfortunatly for me I found it's better to be looking a dork cyclist instead of a dead cyclist, which I nearly was.
There's too many stupid, vain people behind the wheels of powerful cars who are too busy trying to look young in the rearview mirror to be concentrating on the road ahead.
Tell your partner to keep cycling but to get himself noticable. I did, I got myself a recumbent(aka a silly bike to most people)!
Rant over.0 -

Thanks for the link, have seen a few nice looking ones. Yes it is good to stay safe on the roads & us drivers are the first to moan when a cyclist has no lights or can't be seen. I just think the jackets could be made to look up to date blue with a cool illuminous logo or branded name on the back. Sorry if I upset anyone most cyclists look the part & fancible my partner dosen't.0 -
Some of the Berghaus jackets look quite smart, considering their purpose, though some of the colours are ghastly.
But what is so cool about a huge great advert on the back of a jacket?
Might be good for the chav look, but is that really desirable?0 -

I don't think these jackets make you look like a "dork train spotter" - more like a rugged outdoorsy hillwalking mountain person surely?
(After all the point is that's what they are designed for and thats where they are meant to be worn - nobody will think you look like a 'dork' when you are wearing one on a mountain as that's what everyone else will be wearing too) Anyway, I thought that beige was the trainspotters colour of choice.
However mountainwear by Berghaus and particularly North Face is becoming more like streetwear/ chav wear now to the extent that some 'proper'
hillwalkers and mountaineers are avoiding it in favour of other brands like Rab, Mountain Equipment and the like...
If anybody want's an even cheaper alternative to the Berghaus (and isn't concerned about the 'dork factor') then Post Free Outdoor Gear have the Karrimor Men's Ridge II eVENT Jacket (eVENT is waterproof and 'breathable like Gore-Tex, some would say even superior to it) for £49.99:

and Karrimor Men's and Women's Phantom eVENT Jackets for £69.99:

I have rethought about the dork factor & after being freezing at Cromer yesterday I borrowed my mums foggy cardigan on the beach. I didn't care as long as I was warm. As soon as we woke up this morning we nipped into town after a BERGHAUS JACKET but they were soooooooooo expensive. I went alone to Oxfam & found something similar a shell suit very clean used a few times for £2.00 so I bought it, my partner loves it says it's really warm & comfy (I lied & said it was Berghaus ) do look second hand first as you could pick up a real deal.
I am a real moneysaver.
