What do you do with crumbs at bottom of toaster?

My toaster has a crumb tray which I empty now and again; I also give it an upside down shake to get rid of any stragglers but I'm still left with several years worth of stubborn crumbs. I'm sometimes tempted to poke around with a knife to dislodge some but am concerned about damaging the elements. What do others do? Close your eyes to it or ditch the toaster after a length of time and start with new one!
