Mortgage Irregularities - writing off your mortgage - Is it an urban legend?

As my dad always says, 'you never get something for nothing'... So you can imagine my sceptisism when I am told that lawyers can get me 'redress' for 'irregularities' in my mortgage contract which may even go so far as to write off my mortgage debt.
I thought I would ask people in the know what you guys have heard about this. How does it work? Is it nothing more than a scam or is it the next best thing since the discovery of chocolate?
