Help to get back into work

I was just watching the back to work benefits program and was wondering if there is any back to work help for those that aren't on benefits?
I am in my mid 30s and have never had a full time job and have not worked for many, many years. My children are growing up and would love to find something before Christmas to help with money.
I have to idea how to apply for jobs, how to do a CV or even where to look.
My husband works and we are not on benefits. Any thoughts?

Local Careers Centre / Local Papers / voluntary groups - sometimes there are progs funded for people other than benefit claimants.0 -
Maybe do some voluntary work first so you can have something good to put on your CV? If you do a search on the net in your area, there should be some companies you can register to?
I did voluntary work and it really does impress employers. They always mention how much i have done when i have had interviews. Plus it is really enjoyable. I helped run a craft week for people with learning difficulties and i can safely say its the most enjoyable and fun weeks 'work' i have ever done!"You dont need a weather man to know which way the wind blows"0
