Belfast Metropolitan College

Has anyone 'gone back to school'? I am contacting them at the moment for a prospectus. Does anyone know anything about getting in, fees etc, anything at all?

I am 25 and only have gcse's and I now want some A and AS levels to go with them.

Any advice will be appreciated.

  • You will have no problems gettin in for A or AS levels but I would be quick in getting enrolled (by the end of next week if possible) as the classes tend to fill quite quick now that the a level/gcse results are out!

You can download a copy of the part time prospectus which has all fees here: http://www.belfastmet.ac.uk/media/PTPROS09.pdf or give 90265265 a call and they will be able to tell you the fees/dates for a course.

If your longer term aim is to get sufficient qualifications to go to university I suggest you find out about Access courses. These are specifically for adults (over 21 I think) and can be done in the evening. The first year is GCSE standard, but you can go straight into second year which is A Level standard. While you don't get actual A levels you will get an Access to Education qualification which is accepted by all universities for their degree courses. The only exceptions I believe are Oxbridge, and if you are looking to do medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine as these require students to have done actual A level courses. You will probably be one of the youngest in the class if you do go.

If you're just looking to do A levels then contacting the college directly as you have done would be the best bet. They should have open days/evenings coming up very soon - you can pop in and quiz them about fees etc, and discuss the types of courses which are available as well as A levels.

I myself am going back to do a part time degree in university this year, feel like if im gonna get much higher up in my job then i need that extra qualification backing me, I went to BIFHE after leaving school and did my a'levels and did quite well so the standard of teaching is just as good as any school if not better

Don't forget the Open University too - lots of choice, the courses are usually excellent, and you can study with OU even if you haven't taken GCSE/A-level.

In my honest opinion A Levels are a waste of time and there are much more simplier routes to get into Uni. You could do an access course or even get enrolled onto a Higher Education course.
