Hi- I have a filling on my front tooth, which I think looks quite unsightly- my dentist has suggested I have a porcelain veneer put on it- it means going to him for the tooth preparation, then attending a special lab in Cardiff, about 30 miles away, then having the new veneer fitted a couple of weeks after that, at the dentists again. Looking on the internet, it seems they get mixed reviews, but was just wondering if anyone had any experience of them- do they look ok? Do they last? can you still eat `normally, etc? Any info/ feedback would be much appreciated

I had veneers done to my two front teeth about 25 years ago. At the time I was told they would last 10 years. One is still with me and absolutely fine - the other I had a real issue with. On two occasions (in close succession and not long after they were fitted) it broke and had to be replaced. The dentist concuded it was due to my bite and replaced it with a cap which in my opinion does not look as natural. I was however delighted with the improvement and glad I had it done. As I say it was a long time ago and dentistry has probably moved on since then. Good luck whatever you decide to do0

I've had one for 18 years now. Never had a bit of bother with it. I was told it had a shelf life, and that I would need to be careful with eating certain things, but I can eat apples etc no problem. The colour match is very good, and people are usually surprised if I point out which one is the fake one as it were...
I had it done to replace a series of caps, and white fillings none of which stayed in place for very long.x x x0

They can certainly look a lot better than a big white filling at the front of a mouth.
They're not maintenance free, which is why I always advise against having them done just for the sake of it, but it will probably need less replacing than the filling would. How to find a dentist.
 1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
 2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
 3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
 4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0

Are they simple to do if there is a chunk of the tooth missing? I have very soft teeth and have had a filling in my front tooth since childhood. As my teeth are tetracyclene discoloured it is a yellow rather than white filling  but looks terrible.
Unfortunately I am still too skint to get veneers done but when I win the euromillions tomorrow it is first on the list :TIf you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

mine was done to cover up a chipped tooth after I had a collision with a plate glass door. I had white fillings which did not hold for long. Fortunately the last white filling fell out within a year of my son's birth so it was a freebie. x x x0 x x x0

My sister had her 4 front teeth done about a year ago, they look fab.
The only problem with food that she has come against is not being able to bite into an apple! this maybe something purely to do with her or it maybe because she had the 4 teeth done ( i will have to ask her).My beloved dog Molly27/05/1997-01/04/2008RIP my wonderful stepdad - miss you loads:Axxxxxxxxx:Aour new editionsSenna :male: and Dali :female: both JRT0

Well, thanks, guys, for all your help & info- much appreciated.I think, listening to all your comments, that I am making the right decision-it makes all the difference to hear from people who have had the same thing done. I also thank Toothsmith- what he said is very true, it`s not something that would be done for the sake of it, but when there`s a problem, it`s probably the best solution, even though its expensive, I think I`ll feel a lot happier with my smile. :j0
