Have you been "signing on"? If so they should have issued you with a P45 when you started work/signed off. Your new co may have an issue if there is a gap between the finish date on your P45 and your start date with them. If you make sure everyone gets the paperwork they need (and I suggest you ask them if they have all they need) then it should be easily sorted by them. Unfortunately, all our actions are now so dictated by others that there is no chance that anyone in HR (formerly wages depts) will actually be able to act on the basis of common sense>0

Unfortunately the woman at my work who deals with pay is off today so it will have to wait til Monday. Spoke with HMRC who said they didnt issue that code, so the problem def lies with my employer!!
£142 doesnt seem that much tax, out of a £1250 pay packet it must be about 15% tax or something. So even if I was on tax code 647L this month again, would I have got taxed that amount anyway?
Patanne - I did sign on for 3 weeks after uni, yes. Have asked HR to check if they def received my P45 from the Job Centre, that is perhaps the problem here. Although still cant understand why it changed from July to August!0 -
You should receive the P45 direct (or did the employer employ you VIA job centre?)
£142 tax on £1250 pay packet is correct amount of tax.
As already mentioned few times on here before....
Your personal allowance tax free is £540 a month. Everything after that is taxed at 20% (unless you earn over £37400).
So 1250-540=710
710*0.2=142 tax
Once you catch up with the current tax year this will be normal amount of tax to pay every month.0 -
Yeah I did receive the P45 direct and I sent that on, sorry. I just meant the P45 that I was sent from the JC!
Ah well, I guess its not so much of an issue since thats what I should have been tasked. Just disappointed coz I didnt realise the tax free allowance was pro-rata-d, thought I wouldnt need for be taxed for a good few months!!!
Thanks for all the help everyone, definetely understand tax a bit better now!0 -

To know whether you should have paid the tax already, I would need to know how much on the JSA P45... Total paid and tax paid (I suppose that you got that after beginning of April?)
And how much were you paid since start working for your current employer. Because I don't think that you should have been taxed yet.
Basicaly if you are in month 5 (will show on your payslip) you should be able to earn £2700 before paying tax (from April to Aug) incl JSA.
In my reply I was just pointing out that those £142 will be the correct tax once you catch up.0 -
OK, I'm pretty sure I have earnt 2,615 so far in my new position but I also earnt abotu £250 odd when I was claiming JSA, so that will come to over £2700 :-( unfortunately!!!0
