For those of you who take vitamins and minerals, be warned that the government is about to sign
up to the Codex Alimentarius, which will result in the banning of vitamins and minerals above RDA levels and many herbal and other food
supplements unless they are on a doctors precription. This will come into effect on
31st December 2009. unless there is massive opposition.

Please sign the petition to the Prime Minister NOW, it closes next month. (Get your partners and
family and friends to sign up too)

I am so reluctant to sign petitions now since I've learned that it's a way of harvesting email addresses. I don't mean by you karmacookie but somewhere down the line.
Due to what's happening in my life I think, my hair was coming out in handfuls in the shower and my pillow every morning was covered in it.
My hairdresser hadn't seen me in three months. With no prompting she said how thin my hair was. I say thin, it's very thick but due to the normal thickness she noticed the difference.
So, fresh orange with an iron satchet + 1 Zinc +Vit B +Kelp and Vit 3D as always.
14 days later and no abnormal shedding.

Without being able to get those additives I would have been even more stressed.
If only the Combine Harvesters would let up for one night to allow sleep. Noisy beggars all night long. Thank goodness for Forums.
  • Oh, I hope not Mutter

The petition came from a reliable source on a forum that I have been a member of for over 2 years and a frequent poster. It's a forum where many of us rely on our various supplements to stay in good health.

The debate about supplements has been rumbling on for years, but now it really does look like the government is going to take this choice away from us.

If anyone else feels strongly about this issue and does not want to sign an online petition then I would urge you to write to your MP!
  • What's going to happen to the likes of Holland and Barrett I wonder.
I've taken supplements for years with no ill, just good effects, also are sports supplements included amino acids and such in the ban.

Why do people blindly believe this?

Vitamin supplements are not going to be banned, why would they be??? Someone is scaremongering.

Seems like there was similar rumour in the USA in 2005, from SNOPES
    .....

  • Sorry, badly worded and misleading, I was in a hurry when I posted!

Supplements will not be banned altogether but any that contain a higher dose than RDA will be.

Many people take far higher than RDA of vitamins such as vit C and B vits and come to no harm. Our choice to do that is going to be taken away! Also many herbal supplements, that have not gone through the same rigorous and expensive testing as medicines have, will be taken off our shelves.

For instance those taking St Johns Wort for example may find that they cannot purchase it any more or that only companies with enough money to go through all the testing will be able to sell it, therefore making it much more expensive and out of reach for people on low incomes!

Holland and Barrett were giving out cards last year for people to send to their MPs about this issue as obviously it will effect their business. if it was scaremongering I don't think they would have bothered!

  • From their FAQs on their site:
R1: Will Codex make all nutritional supplements only available by prescription? Will Codex ban all supplements and make vitamins illegal the same way heroin is illegal? Will all natural herbs and alternative remedies be banned by Codex?

These are some of the many unfounded rumours about Codex that can be found on the internet. The Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements (CAC/GL 55-2005) adopted in 2005 do not contain provisions for the prescription or prohibition of any nutrient supplements. They do not deal with natural herbs and remedies at all (see also W1)

The only thing it does is stop people selling stuff without proper packaging saying what it is and in what quantities, which is a good thing.
Whats more to the point is that its voluntary, a guideline, not even a full on law.
