Issues with Student Loan Company

Hi all,

I decided to bite the bullet this morning and rang the SLC to find out how much I still owed them. This turned out to be a wise move as I was informed by the SLC that they only started receiving payments in May of 2006 from the Inland Revenue. To me this was absolute nonsense as a SLC payment has been leaving my pay packet since at least 2004. The person I spoke to suggested that I speak to my employer, and as I'm a teacher, this means going through the LEA. Having spoke to the LEA I found out that they had records for my payments from August 2005, but couldn't give me any more information as they'd updated their system that only held records from this date. The lady said that she would do some digging round in the records for me. What can/should I do if the lady comes back to me with further evidence of payments made? Who do I complain to? What action can I take?

Thanks

Employers are legally required to keep payroll records for 6 years, they should still have tax year 2003/04 so you should be ok.

surely you have you payslips and P60s for these years?

have you not received yearly statements from SLC?
  • I moved around a lot and wasn't vigilant with updating them with my new addresses. I've spoken to my LEA and they are sending me copies of all my P60's. Not sure what to do once I received them though, providing I find an error.

your P60 should show how much student loan you repaid.
send copies to the SLC and ask them to update their records.

and start to keep copies of all theses sorts of things... can come in verry handy.
