I usually go to markets late if i'm going at all, its amazing how long their prices come down when its near the end of the day.
Have a look in iceland sif they have one near you, their frozen veg is quite reasonable, as is farm foods and you can just use what you need and put back. I'm not sure if they still do their meal deals for a fiver either, but with all your rice and pasta and the ideas on here you should do it. (esp. penny-pincher!!)_Good luck!!0 -
There are some brilliant ideas here. Thanks everyone - especially PP for the detailed menu plan! I'm going to print everything out to read over the weekend (hopefully I'll be feeling a bit more cheerful by then) and will come up with a day-by-day meal plan. I'm sure it's manageable. It's funny, the more I think about what's in the cupboards and freezer the more I'm astonished by how many meals I can create without buying anything other than a bit of basic fruit and veg. For example, I've got a tin of chickpeas and some curry powder in the cupboard. Add an onion, some mushy (cheap!) tomatoes and I've got a nice veggie curry that'll do for two meals. Having enough food to eat isn't going to be a problem, it's finding the motivation to prepare sensible meals that'll be hard.0
