Where are you thinking of going to ?
  • Exactly, I think, without my routine, my animals I'd be looking for new experiences/sights all the time. TBH buying a holiday home, unless I was drawn to it for a particular reason (which doesn't seem to be your case here) I wouldn't enjoy. But I know many people would. For me, while I'd revisit places I also enjoy novelty and learning. :)

We had planned on taking an extended holiday (several months) to do some travelling - we didn't have the money at the start of our careers - but will have at the end - funny isn't it?

We particularly enjoy the US for holidays - we like the way of life, the ease of doing things (foreign languages for both of us - nil points), but I wouldn't want to live there - too many extremes.

But taking the time out to do some travelling will give us the opportunity to visit places in an eastwards direction - OH has some sort of aversion to going east.

Call it right, perhaps that will work (would not on my wife she would go left) :). I went to turkey a few years ago. I was a bit unsure to start off with but for history and preserved ancient buildings and artifacts the place is amazing. The people are really nice and very friendly, it as a very secure feeling.

Really want to do Egypt (I have been to 2 sites of the ancient wonders of the world would like to do more) but that is still a bit to unsettled for me. Perhaps when I am older.

Yes, I did know that - but I thought people got round it by keeping an address here, or using a relatives address - I know it's not legal.

Also I think for most countries with health care provision (like Spain) you have to over 60 to get it free. And we won't be.

It is something to be aware of, I hope you can get round it.

I would go abroad. I'll be retiring to Thailand where I already have a paid for apartment and am looking at buying a retirement house (near the beach, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, private swimming pool etc) for less than £110,000.

Even forgetting your cash lump sum, £40,000 will give you a life equivalent to twice or three times that much in some countries, including Thailand. As retirees, you would find it hard to spend that much.

Families are all well and good, but this is 2009. They have invented airplanes and prices are at their cheapest (in real terms) in history.

Don't let others - or a sense of obligation to others - ruin your retirement. You only get one.

We hadn't anywhere specific in mind - at one point I thought about Spain - mainly for ease of access and travel time - but everyone and their granny lives there. OH isn't keen, he doesn't really like the Spanish (am I allowed to say that?) We don't speak Spanish - so that would mean a British enclave or living with a phrase book.

It would need to be somewhere that was English speaking or had English as a second language.

My brother is off to Belize - bought some land and had a house built out there - he is going on a retirement visa. He is 49, but has an RAF pension, which goes up a lot when he reaches 55. So that was a thought - OH wouldn't entertain that.

In my bones I think we will end up staying here - OH thinks there is no where like the UK - he has lived abroad in several locations - where I haven't.

I have been to Egypt a number of times, as has OH (diving), I did the cultural thing while he swanned around in a boat looking at the fish & coral.

He wouldn't go to Turkey - though I would.

I don't see anything in the state of the UK economy at the moment that will affect you much... you seem to have a good pension and lots of capital.

If you want to live abroad then do so but surely not because of the state of the UK economy.

Just go travelling for a while
then if you want to try living abroad then rent somewhere and see how you like it.
Only then think about selling here and buying abroad.

Ephesus is amazing, considering the place is only 10% uncovered.

You may be able to get him over if he was a strong Christian it was the last place the Virgin Marry lived. I told that to a catholic guy once and he soon changed his mind and went over there :)

Language, culture and customs. Was the direction of my question.

Going on holiday is so different to living somewhere.

Some friends of ours have had had a house built on Harris in Scotland and have recently retired there. Up sticks and left there lives in the South behind.

Plenty of good places in the UK if you spend some time looking.
