Advice needed from someone that understands credit reports!

I've just had my report through the post and there are some errors on there. Nothing major, just my date of birth is listed wrong from when my employer did a credit search on me - but its shown wrong 6 times. It's also listed incorrectly by Orange.

Also 18 months ago I was late making a payment to Tesco Finance. Not my fault (they didn't tell me I needed to make a payment by cheque as there wasn't enough time to change a DD) and they said it wouldn't be listed, but it has been. This is also listed.

Apart from Tesco I have no other 1-6 markers. Everything else is S, U, N, . or 0. But I have recently been declined for a loan. I'm not sure why and the report doesn't make it any clearer.

If someone could advise me I would be extremely grateful. :T

I'm not too knowledgeable about credit reports but I'm sure someone better will be along soon!

I do know that there are three different credit file companies and they don't all have the same info. Have you requested a copy of your file from each? Only then can you see all the info that is held about you, I guess. The company who denied you a loan may be using any one of these file agencies and will, anyway, have their own criteria for lending. Could you appeal the loan decision or ask them why you were declined, I believe you can ask for this info.

It might be worth getting in touch with Tesco Finance, just to query that the late payment has been added to your file. You might not get it removed but it can't hurt to ask I guess.

I think the date of birth thing, maybe you need to correct that info. Does the credit file company have the incorrect date of birth for you or was this a mistake made by those doing the searches (your employer)? I believe you can submit info to the file companies but don't know how so take someone else's advice on that!!

Having said I don't know anything... still managed to whitter on for a while :rotfl:

Good luck getting it sorted! :D

  • Thank you for replying. I have emailed Eqifax and asked for the wrong info to be removed and/ or changed. I suppose I will just have to wait and see.

I hope that they are helpful and you manage to get the info corrected.

I've just thought - do you have any 'available credit' like cards that you have cut up but not cancelled the account? Only because quite a few people find that this is part of why they are declined, it looks to lenders as though you have a lot of credit at your disposal even though you have no intention of spending it (and/or no card to spend it with :rotfl: ). Obviously all accounts should show on your file but, again, they could be logged with one credit file company but not all of them.

    Good luck :D

  • earlier in the month I cancelled all my credit and store cards that I wasn't using. I now have only one credit card and two loans. I don't really need a loan, but the interest rate would have been a few % less than I'm paying now. I will probably just leave it the way it is. I'm sure my file will resolve its self - although it may be that attitude that got me here in the first place!

    Hi never_again

Agree with Kathfish. With your DOB - inform the CRA asap and ask them to chase up the companies that have got it wrong and change it. It's important that it's correct. When you ask for this, ensure you say why it is wrong, ie. have they transposed date/month, pure data entry error, etc. I've still got a notice of correction on one of mine for this, as there hasn't been a response from that particular company yet.

The cards that you recently cancelled, are they showing as settled on your report? If not, this could be a reason for being declined further credit.

I've not dealt with Equifax, just Experian - though I have found them to be helpful on all the errors (only 8  ) and most of them were answered within a week.

    Hope that helps.
