Since updating to the latest version of Firefox I have had problems with it freezing.
A scout on the Mozilla forum says other people have too, so my question is......

should I downgrade to an older version, or find a new one?

If so which one?

This could end up as a huge browser argument.....

BUT...I use Opera and have for ages. It's got a lot going for it including built-in mail client and a nice interface. On the downside, there's a few websites which don't support it

Got latest firefox - works fine - you might have incompatible add-ons (try disabling any addons you have) - easier still uninstall firefox, delete your program folder and profile data. Re-install and start with a fresh install.

    take back up of bookmarks.

Use the add on xmarks to synchronise your bookmarks, and the FEBE add on is great for backing up all your add on's

My step-dad's computer freezes when he uses Firefox. I never found out why - just told him to stick to using IE. :o

I've tried Chrome - but had some problems with text selection i.e. double click to select a word would select to the end of the document - which annoyed me as I normally double click and drag to snap the selection to whole words.

    I second Opera.

As for compatibility.... once using Opera: F12 > Edit site preferences > Network... you can then choose the browser you wish to emulate.

I second Google Chrome, very quick, and exceptionally fast JavaScript engine (makes feature-rich sites run more smoothly)
