I have the Panasonic machine and its great, interested to read that i can leave out the milk powder AND the sugar and the loaf will taste the same.
I thought you needed sugar to help ferment the yeast or something like that?

I'm not sure whether you would save on baking your own bread as you can always find deals with bread in the shops. However, I don't buy bread - only if I want it to make stuffing as I feel my home baked bread is too good for that!
I really can't comment on bread machines as I have never owned one - I bake bread every week the old fashioned way and I don't measure anything. I make two loaves at a time and there is nothing better than the smell of bread.
As others here have said, you know exactly what goes into your own bread and you can vary what you bake with different flours that are available, even organic flours. You can buy the cheaper bread flour if you want to, I never do though - I did once but shan't do that again, you can tell the difference in quality.0
