I've never had any hassle with garlic and I've found the powder very lacking.

I make real old style ginger beer which requires the grating of a lot of ginger. I boil it, grate it but never peel it. I even grate it direct into curries.

  • I tend to use dried or powdered herbs & spices rather than fresh & everything comes out ok. A great alternative though is the "lazy" versions. You can buy jars of chillis, ginger & garlic already prepared & in oil which I find very handy.

Powdered garlic does not have the health benefits of fresh garlic, which is a superfood.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Seems all the powdered ginger is good for is gingerbread, etc. I think I'll buy myself one of those garlic crushers and bulk freeze some fresh garlic and ginger.

I've just seen garlic ginger and chilli paste in jars for 59p in a chealie shop. I didn't buy it because I have a habit of buyibg these kinds of things and throwing them out a few weeks later.
It wasn't pure paste but in some sort of liquid?

How do you make your ginger beer please? That is one of my next things to try again - made it years ago, but completely forgot how.

In Asda today they had minced ginger and garlic frozen into cubes (Asian bit of freezer section) for £1 a pack (£2.50 per kg).
