milk freezing question

milk is soooo much cheaper in large volumes, but I live by myself and don't get through it before it goes off.

would it be safe to buy, say, a 4pt bottle, decant it into four containers and freeze them, or would opening it potentially introduce bacteria etc that could cause it to go "off" whilst frozen, or very soon afterwards?

I've done this before but I do find it goes off quicker when it's been frozen. I'm using a lot at the mo so not longer have this problem but I do find skimmed milk goes off slower generally.
  • thanks :) do you find that all milk goes off quicker after being frozen, or just that which has been removed from its original packaging?

we freeze ours in its 4 pint unopened container, and it doesnt seem to go off any faster than normal.

But it rarely gets the chance in our house to be honest.

I would imagine that if you were to decant into "sterile" 1 pint containers (500ml coke bottles) then you should be ok.
Any bacteria would only get chance to multiply once you thawed it out, and if you only have a pint to shift it shouldnt take long..

  • Have you tried the filtered fresh milk? Tesco sell it and it always has a much longer date on it than the standard milk. Similar price and regularly on offer too e.g. 2x 4 pints for £3
  • I think you'd still be saving if you just bought 1 pint bottles and froze them - none of it would go off then. And it would be quicker to defrost
  • I use a pint before it goes off anyway though. It's just that it's 50p a pint, or £1 for 4 pints. I could probably use the freezer space for other stuf tbh, just a vague plan for if i happened to have some space :)

I read this and instantly though - glass bottles. I then thought you might mean plastic, but please don't freeze glass. A friend of mine had a glass bottle shatter in her freezer, and she had to chuck everything as she couldn't be sure that there wouldn't be glass shards

As this Q has now been answered, I'll add this to the existing Freezing milk thread ;)

I freeze milk and have had no problems before, during or after but I do tend to defrost mine in the fridge which takes a while.

But I always keep powdered milk in the cupboard that way if I run out I rinse out the milk carton and make up half or a quarter of a pint in the milk container - just add powder and water into bottle, put the lid on and shake well, it tastes much better made up than just added into dry into tea, then keep it in the fridge and use as normal.

if its cheaper per pint to buy a 4pt bottle of milk, rather than 4 individual pints, i would buy the 4pts, and then just chuck away the rest if it goes off

but most 4pt bottles have a use by date of at least 1wk, and i would think even a single person would get through 4pts a week
