Self Employed Reference Number

Hi
Can anyone advise me?
I registered online as self employed.
Does anyone know how long it will take for my reference number etc to come through?
Many thanks

Unfortunately HMR&C seem to think its OK to have widely differing times for Tax Reference Numbers to be sent out depending where you are/how busy they think they are. Anything from 4-16 weeks has happened to clients of mine.

You are in the system, so relax. You wont need your number until you come to self assess.

That's true as far as the relationship between self-employed person and HMRC is concerned.

Unfortunately some clients want to know the number if they are going to give you work. They are trying to cover their backs against claims they are employers rather than clients.
  • Judging by this forum, more and more people are turning to self employment just to make ends meet, to have something to fall back on or because they have been made redundant or want to work from home. I suspect that this is causing delays.

I hope that the registration letter from HMRC comes soon.

I would never gve my UTR to anyone! Just having a UTR does not make you self employed with a particvualr employer. If anyone I do work for wants proof I am self employed, I tell them to check with their tax office as to whether they can treat me as self employed or not. The possession of a UTR does NOT make you self employed!

Agree. I've had the same UTR for years .... when I was firstly employed, then self employed and now when I'm employed again!

UTR is of no use to anyone except HMRC. If you don't have/know your UTR, HMRC can trace your records using your NI No. anyway!
