What style of Wedding dress if you have a big belly

I'm getting married in February and have an appointment next week with lady who will be making my dress. She's asked me to bring along any pictures of dresses I like from magazines etc to give her an idea of the style I want etc
The problem is i've saw dozens of dresses I love but I know wouldn't look right on me because of my shape.
I've lost nearly a stone and hope to lose a bit more before the final fitting but i've still got no waist and a potbelly (at the top just under my boobs).I've had 6 big babies which has taken its toll on my figure.I'm one of those ladies that people ask "when's the baby due" only to be told "i'm not pregnant"
I wear 18 in jeans/trousers but have to buy 20/22 in tops to allow for my tummy. Dresses with a fitted waist are (I feel) out of the question and I don't want to wear too loose a fitting one as yes ......I really would look pregnant
Have any of you lovely ladies had a similar problem and if so what style of dress did you eventually go for ?
BTW i'm 42 and this is a 2nd time round wedding for me so I don't want to look like mutton dressed as lamb either.....any ideas?

or a dress with detail eg folded material at the tummy or a dress that widens at the hips to take the eye up and away from ur tummy!!!
Hope that helps!!!!:heartsmil Engaged 31st May 2008 :heartsmil

I don't have 6 kids! (wow you! how busy must you be?) but I do have a pot belly, same as you, under my (non existant boobs, which makes it worse)
I found that the corset style dresses really helped. Mine gives me the waist I haven't seen for about 5 years and I love the shape it gives me.
Best thing I think you can do really is go and try some on. You won't know until you see them. I certainly had no intention of choosing the style of dress I did until I saw myself in it!
Good luck!

The meeting with the dressmaker is only an initial one to take measurements and discuss ideas etc. No cast in stone decisions to be made right now.
I can still remember trying on wedding dresses from the first time round(it was not a pleasant experience) and I really want to avoid it if at all possible.
I do have a good idea of what suits me on a day to day basis and how to dress to disguise my belly. Obviously dressing for my wedding is a tad different than for say a night out on the town and cream/white isn't the most slimming of colours on a less than perfect figure.
Can I ask if you wear a boned/corset style dress is the boning in the dress sufficient to pull your waist in or would an additional corset be needed aswell? How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0 -
My dress is very heavily corseted so I found it was more than enough. The advantage I found was that everything it pulled in, it pulled up so I look like I have a chest! :j lol
I think if you are having one made, it may not be corseted enough so a corset may be an idea.
Or a dress which isn't as structured with a corset underneath.
I LOVE corsets having worn my first steel boned one for my hen do. Nothing bulged anywhere, it was amazing.

go to a department store and try on various styles of non wedding dress,it doesn't matter about the colour/pattern/length just the shape.
Debenhams usually have lots of corset style dresses and it will just be you in the changing room.
corsets can work wonders but remember comfort is a factor as too.
hope you find a style you truly love.
six kiddies eh? are you having the dress made in stainproof fabric?lol
I only have one and I rarely make it through the door without an extra "pattern" on my top.0 -
an empire line would hide the belly - but most "larger ladies" really suit a traditional ball gown/corset top style - just don't go *too* puffy on the skirt - a simple Aline will look far better than the huge princess frothy sort!
A heavier fabric and matte not shiny0 -

I actually have a decent set of bosoms (even if they have started the long journey southwards) Unfortunate having a big gut kind of makes them look smaller IYKWIM I do wear a padded bra with a set of chicken fillets to help counteract this. Jaysis the things we women have to do to look good eh?

I would love to have even an illusion of a waist on my wedding day.
Mayb if I went for a heavily boned dress, added a bit of padding to the boob area and had a slightly flared skirt it would make me look a bit more hourglass in shape? How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0 -

My two oldest daughters (18 and 19) are my brides maids, the 20,12 and 10 year olds lads are ushers and my 3 year old son and 2 year old grand daughter(will be 4 and 3 by the time I get married) will be ring bearers.
My 10 year old was really really excited about being an usher but had to ask about an hour later "whats an usher?" :rotfl:
My first wedding 22 years ago was a cheap and not very cheerful event and things have changed so much since then. I'd never even heard of wedding favours until lately.
I've spent the last couple of days getting sorted with my daughters the style of dress they will be wearing and i've looked at so many wedding mags and websites my head's pickled. How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0
