Mmm, that sounds yummy. I've added it to my favourites to make one day.

Exactly. Lentil and carrot soup is yummy (esp with nice bread), can be made cheaply and can also be spiced up a bit by adding red peppers or some passata/tinnned toms, spices etc.

This sounds really nice, do you have a basic recipe you could send to me? :o
  • Lentils have been more expensive that split peas for a long time as far as i know. A useful thread though as lentils are mentioned so often, no one seems to think of split peas!

Have to say I've had no joy with them myself, however long I soak them i can't get them to cook soft. :-/ They're nice in pasty with onions though if you can do it!

try cooking them with no salt first, though i've never had any problems cooking peas with ham/bacon etc, i do know that beans stay starchy if you cook them with salt so you have to wait til they are done to add stock cubes or salt for seasoning, so whilst they aren't the same thing maybe that might help?

  • I noticed that the price has soared in Asda too so I buy the broth mix and use that for bulking out instead

Try adding a tsp bicarb of soda to the cooking water, this should help to soften them up.
