Generally it's heating (both central heating and water heating) that uses most electricity. Do you find that your bills in the summer months are significantly cheaper?

Sounds like you'd save a fair amount just by not leaving your sky box/DVD players/stereos etc on standby 24/7? You seem to have a lot of equipment on a lot of the time, and just by turning them off at the plug whilst they are not in use would cut down your electricity usage.

Do all you can to save electric.

    Some ideas here https://www.energysavingtrust.co.uk

Is your dishwaster/ washing machine ALWAYS full
do you have any energy efficient lightbulbs in
Do you have your boiler & loft lagged properly

There are some OS tips like, turn your oven off for 5 mins before the food will be ready, the oven will continue to cook for 5 mins at the same heat, if you are cooking a pie, stick in some sausage rolls ( just an example) at the same time, so you dont have to have your oven on.

I woud say, having the heating on in this weather  No need really. We "get used to a certain level of heat, my parents dont really bother with heating till the pits of winter, and nor do I, as a result when I go hot places, I always overheat a bit. Weve got the patio doors open most evenings.

If you have central heating, are there any radiators/ heaters you can turn right down or off. I havent had the hall one on in my flat for over a year, and Ive NEVER turned the kitchen one on, it just doenst need it.

Turn your thermostat down a few notches, chances are you wont notice the difference!

If this is really bugging you, look at all the bigger and heavier equipment (and also the equipment that spend a lot of time on regardless of size) and find out it's Kw/H rating. This will tell you how much energy the device actually uses and is often on a little sticker at the back near the power cord inlet or underneath out of sight. Things like lightbulbs have it printed on the bulb etc (note that a 100w bulb will be 0.1 Kw/H but energy saving bulbs "equivelant rating" should not be used, most ES bulbs will tell you the exact Kw/H).

When you have the Kw/H for the devices likely to be the culprits, multiply the time the device spend on (in hours) by it's Kw/H rating and then multiply that by the price of each Kw/H (aka "unit") which should be printed somewhere on your electric bill.

If you're on a dual-rate (Economy 7 etc) then bare in mind there will be 2 different unit prices, and sometimes when you reach a certain number of units on a single rate, the unit price will also drop.

The answers to the calculations above will show you the approximate cost of each device for the day, and thus you can start to factor things like only using it half the time will save you a tenner a week etc. You'll probably find some surprising things come up in your list! (Also keep an eye out for white goods that still claim to have a high energy efficiency rating - it means nothing as they are wasteful by nature!!)

    Happy hunting :)

tumble driers really clock up. Earwig, can you get some clothes horses to dry clothes on? We got some for a fiver in wilkos and they are fine. On windy days you can pag clothes to them to & stick them in the garden. otherwise we have them in the hall and everything dries within a day ( except jeans- they take day & night)

try changing lightbulbs as well as you seem to have them on alot more than the average person
100 watt bulb =1.0 unit per 10 hours
    60 watt = 1.0 unit per 16 hours
    40 watt fluorescent strip= 1.0 unit per 25 hours
    20 watt cpl = 1.0 unit per 50 hours
    11 watt cpl = 1.0 unit per 80 hours
