I once the best chocolate bread and butter pudding EVER and have been trying to make it ever since.

I tried the Delia one; it is nice, but takes a long time, with the soaking for 48 hours.
I also successfully amended it, quicker and better - but for the life of me I can't remember how!

I had a Simon Rimmer recipe from the BBC site, too. Try BBC Food.

I think most of you know this - but it's disappointing to find that the wonderful, dense, richly-spiced-and-fruited bread pudding you thought was coming is actually this soggy, eggy, curled-up-slices-of-old-bread monstrosity.

    Accept no imitations.

It's a matter of taste though isn't it... I would take the soggy, eggy, curled-up-slices-of-old-bread monstrosity every time! :D

I've only ever had bread and butter pudding, and I love it. Not sure i'd like bread pudding. Looking at the recipe, it almost looks like a fruit cake, except instead of using flour you sort of turn the bread back into flour that's already had liquid added (that makes sense in my head, I swear). Does that sound about right? I know it would have a pretty different flavour, obviously.

I like the gloopy custardy mess of bread and butter pudding, so I think I'll stick with it.

I made bread pudding yesterday. I make both types as we love them both, You can add custard to bread pud to make it into a dessert!
I use marmalade in bread and butter for a different flavour.

yes, it is much more like a cake and had a more solid consistency than b&b pud. You can have it warm as a pudding or cold as a treat :)

    Chocolate chunk bread pudding.

Roughly chop 200g of baguette and put into a large bowl.
Melt 100g of milk choc in a pan with 500g carton of fresh custard and 150ml of milk over a low hear.
Stir gently until the choc has melted. Beat in one large egg.
Pour over the bread stir well to coat and chill for at least 4 hrs.
    Preheat the oven to 180c.
Spoon the mixture into a buttered 1.4 litre ovenproof dish (i just use a casserole) and bake for 30-40 mins.
Sprinkle with 1tbsp of demerara sugar, 50g of chopped walnuts, and 50g of choc chunks. Continue to cook for 20-30 mins until set lightly.
    Serve warm with double cream.

    I hope this helps you!

Do you need to remove the crust from the baguette or is it ok added? I've never made bread and butter pudding.
Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!

Oh you add it. It makes the pudding lovely and firm. The crust soaks up so much of the moisture that you can't really tell the difference.

I love the Delia one too, especially as it can be made in advance, I usually make it the night before, then all you have to do is pop it in the oven whilst eating the main course. It also reheats well the next day if there are any left overs.
