I go for the avent hand pump as well, the thought of electic one put me off, (rather control the squeezing of my boobs myself)

currently 8 months pregnant with no 3, and having got rid of all baby stuff after baby no 2 had to buy again, so I found one on ebay, nearly new, boxed on ebay for about £5 +pp, you can buy new shells if you need, but remember everything can be steralised, so no need to buy new
  • i've got the avent one which i used ... but to be perfectly honest i use to get better results just doing it by hand without the use of any pump :)

I have been using the Avent Isis to express as still breastfeeding but allows me freedom for a couple of hours!

I used an electric pump wiv first sprog and found it hard to use but the Avent one is brill- feels just like my baby feeding tho I find it even quicker to express whilst looking at my lil one! weird!

i now have two pumps as work bought me one as maternity gift, but I had already spotted one in a charity shop window still boxed for only £4- so will be putting one on ebay when I find 5 minutes....

Good luck with it all anyway- and hope this advice helps?

i have an electric and a hand pump

but unlikey everyone else, i have avent for both. i have the avent isus manual and the avent uno (which is more expensive then the medela)

i bought a hand pump in a huge avent set for £100 that included steraliser, bottle warmer, 12 bottles and the manual pump, as well as some little things, so i didnt find it too expensive, as i wasnt sure what id need as im a first time mum. the whole set saved over £50 so i could always say the pump was free in the set....

anyways, i found the manual pump was pretty good (try to use it still warm from the steraliser) although i did get more out of my right boob with my hand, than with the pump. manual is def for v specifically full times though like on one boob as you feed on the other (its easier than it sounds i promise!) oe engorgement.

after 3 weeks i got an electric as we felt that we were pretty much 'there' and we were established. i just went for avent as its simple and easy and the manual can act as spare parts for it! it cost my £75 (i used a boots code) and its prob the best spend money i used. its v powerful, reassuringly comfortable and you can easily use it on the move or absentmindly. i always hold a bottle under the other breast when i express as the other one will let down as you express. i hear breast shells are just as good, but i had tons of bottles and didnt wanna spend money on something so small! def do this though, cause my other one would tend to let down 1-2 ozs without any help.

obviously electric is really a luxury. i give my little one a bottle of breast milk a day in order to help her 'remember' how to suck a bottle so that i can leave her occasionally to go out, and i would never have been able to do this without the electric. if you're planning on working a double pump might be more useful, but i found a single pump briliant.

Thank you all very much for the tips :)

It's been helpful to read your experiences, and i shall probably wait till bump arrives and see how the breastfeeding goes now, as i don't want to splash out and find I don't use one.
    Thanks again !!
