Oven canopy cleaning help needed please!

Hi, my dd and her oh have bought a house which has an inbuilt cooker and hob with a canopy over. These were disgustingly dirty, and they were going to get them professionally cleaned but I thought I'd try to save them a few quid and did it myself with gumption and elbow grease! Oven and hob has come up well, but the canopy has 2 aluminium mesh grids which is encased in smelly built up grease! I don't have a canopy so not cleaned one before.
Reading Kim and Aggies book hasn't helped as it tells you to scrub them and I've scrubbed them with boiling water and washing up liquid and there is still some residue in there. How can I get it really clean? Can they go in the dishwasher? Can you use washing soda with aluminium?
I don't know the make and am not sure if they could buy new ones, but I don't mind cleaning them if I can save them money.
Thanks.
Margaret

Mine go in the dishwasher but they are not that dirty.
One of the experts will be along shortly

I would soak them in something that 'eats through grease' i use anything like multi purpose cleaner & washing up liquid, then go at them with a little scrubbing brush - a nail brush would be ideal see if that works?

I did ours with a wire washing up brush (from lidl, - with lots of elbow grease!) when I moved in. Might be worth soaking them in a dishwasher tab dropped into boiling water, I find leaving that overnight in really bad dishes lifts & softens most things. Have you tried baby oil? I know it sounds crazy, but someone at work told me about it & it worked wonders on the ss outer of our hood etc. Failing those I would def. consider the dishwasher, but I would try & soak/treat beforehand, to avoid the possibility of the dishwasher 'setting' the grot rather than removing it.0

Thanks mazzarati2000. Can you use a wire brush on aluminium? I thought that because it's a 'soft' metal, I wouldn't be able to use anything too harsh
I tried the soaking overnight in boiling water, but all I got in the morning was a sinkful of cold congealed grease which I had to lift the filters out of:eek:
I thought the baby oil on ss was to lessen the fingerprints being shown, but I'll keep this suggestion in mind and may use it when it's eventually all cleaned up.
I will not be beaten by this:D0 -
I soaked mine in ovenpride in a bag overnight for a similar situation and it worked a treat but I don't know if you can use it for aluminium. Biological washing powder in a bath of very hot water might work too.2019 fashion on a ration 0/66 coupons0

Thanks *jellie* I used those bags for the rest of the oven (they're great - if not enviromentally good!) and they worked a treat - unfortunately you can't use them with aluminium.
The biological washing powder is a possibility as I've heard that one before. I don't use powder - I wonder if liquid would work - or even oxgy stain remover?
May be worth a try!0 -
How did you get on? Good point about Aluminium, sorry, I think ours may be SS. The baby oil removed a thick layer of grease on our hood, I was shocked! I imagine a dihwasher tab in boiling water would have a similar effect to washing powder,if you have any?0

have you tried the white vinegar and soda bicarb combined with boiling water and a little washing up liquid trick ?
Worked for mine ridiculously easily but i spose it depends how bad.....worth a shot vinegar cuts through grease fab0 -
How about soaking in the bath with soda crystals ovenight and then sticking them in the DW the next morning? It's probably far kinder to them than scrubbing (and kinder to your hands & nails!).
Your DD is very lucky to have a mum who will work so hard for her!0 -
I'd love to know how you got on Margaret as I have a canopy and the first time I cleaned it I just sprayed it with a foam oven cleaner and took all the paint off. So have been very reluctant to inflict any future damage on it.0
