A young friend of mine has had to change her work to part time due to illness. She is coping with her card repayments OK but money is tight.
She had recently joined a gym but is unable to pay the monthly fees. Her medical team said that they would write and explain her situation to get her out of the contract. They forgot.
It has now been passed to Debt Resolutions. She has offered to pay monthly instalments of £10 per week. They are trying to charge her a direct debit set up fee. They also are applying an unfair amount of interest. The debt owed is about £300.
She is not in a fit state to deal with the hassle.
Could she ring them to tell them that I have permission to negotiate on her behalf?
Secondly I am thinking about offering a full and final amount. Do you think this is possible? If so, how much would you suggest I offer?
Thanks for reading.

Hi Pobby - Im back
I'm not 100% but i have spoken to ppl on my OH;s behalf when things have been in his name only and they usually only want to speak to him first to get his authority, some are pickier and want it in writing but either way I'm sure you will be able to represent on her behalf.

Well what a nice surprise. How are you? I was only thinking about you a few days ago and wondered how life was for you. Nice to have you back.0 -
The authority to act on her behalf really needs to be in writing. That will also help if they get 'shirty' and refuse to deal with you, since you have proof.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Would you consider asking for a full and final?0

Personally, as long as your friend agrees, I'd just ring them and 'be' her.........how would they know the difference? I'd definitely try for the f&f tooI let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -

Well glad you are OK Dotty. It must be a relief having a set monthly income. If you remember I am self employed and my income is 35% of what it was. Still with my wife working as well we are OK.
Cheesed me off to hear about that court case hun.0 -
Commercial gyms do not give a toss who you are or how much you owe they just want their money. Chances are it hasn't passed to debt resolution at all, it's still in house and someone is on commission to get your friend to pay up. I have seen this from the inside.
Has your friend now got a letter from her medical team? Can they explain on headed paper how long she has been unable to deal with the gym situation due to her health? This should be sent recorded delivery to the correct person to cancel the membership - some gyms it's the manager of the club, some it's head office. You will need to check the contract and maybe ring head office.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
