Digital camera - 10 x plus zoom

Hi all,

I'm looking for a cheap Ultra zoom digital camera. 4mp plus, with a 10 x zoom lens or more. (Lookingto spend as little as possible!!!)

I know of the Kodak one for £152 on Amazon, but it's not anti shake stabilised which I need when using the zoom.

I was looking at a used one, for £100 from Jessops, but they now tell me they aren't selling used anymore.

So 2 questions.......... suggestions on camera. (Was thinking Dimage z3, z5, z6,) if there are others please suggest away.

Secondly, is there anywhere to buy used cameras from that give a years warranty apart from Jessops, Jacobs and Uk Digital cameras.

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

    Watcha,

Take a look here for a features search ad https://www.dpreview.com. Select Zoom tele to be 320 mm + and image stabilisation to yes and any other features your looking for and this should pull back a short list for you to work from.

I have a preference for the panasonic's myself, but to be honest, thats all most of us can give you, OUR preference. Get a short list, get youself back to jessops / jacobs and take a look at the cameras in question.

On the used camera Q, some independent camera shops may be able to help?

I was recently looking for a camera on the same sort of criteria. If you're looking for one with an anti-shake image stabiliser then you'll probably have to look well outside the £150-£200 bracket unfortunately. I think the cheapest I could find was the Dimage Z5 and Z6 for a little over £200, but they seem to get quite mixed reviews and I don't particularly like their look and feel, personally. Maybe one of the Panasonics would be a better bet.

I wouldn't necessarily dismiss the Kodak model from Amazon, though. In the end I went for a Kodak DX7590 from Ebuyer (£132 at the time) - which is pretty similar. I've been delighted with it. For me, the lack of image stabiliser hasn't been as much of an issue as I was led to believe. (Actually, while having the 10x zoom really makes photography a lot more fun, it's not really that frequently that I use it to its full extent anyway.) And though it's not a substitute, I got a mini tripod from 7dayshop for 99p and it's been great! Might be an alternative to forking out an extra £100 for the image stabiliser on a Panasonic, it depends what your budget will allow I guess...

Another model to consider might be the Kodak P850, £240 at pixmania (and there are probably some discount codes floating around too): 12x zoom, image stabiliser, and a big 2.5" screen. And this is probably not what you're looking for, but I've just seen that Amazon have got the Fuji S7000 for under £200 at the moment, which looks like a great deal.

    Have fun choosing!

I have got quite shaky hands, so I think the stabiliser is the way for me to go as I frequently use the zoom on my current camera.

The thing I don't like about Kodaks is their infernal Li Ion battery. What's wrong with a good old set of AA NiMH?
Incidently Jessops had a Z3 for £100, as new condition, but they "lost it". Good eh? lol

You could have a look at this Fuji model S5600, I have the previous model and it has been fantastic, it does not have an anti shake mode but does not suffer much from shake even at full zoom, I even have a 1.5 x lens on top of that and it is still good, one of the new things that this model has is a anti blur mode. Here is a link for one of the best prices I could find.

If anti-shake is crucial (as well as low cost of course...), it might be worth taking a look at the Canon Powershot S1 IS, currenlty £175.76+P&P at Ebuyer. A very good camera by all accounts, though I imagine it'll put most people off that it's only 3.2mp.

The 5600 is OK, but the lens is huge, really huge!!!
And the S1 IS does put me off being 3.2MP, as my current one is 2MP and I want a bit more of an increase, but thanks for the suggestions?
    Any more anyone????

Do not understand  when you say the lens is really huge as it is not any bigger than the Canon, Kodak or panasonic cameras, also you need a bit of length to the lens for stability (something to hold to give support),the only reason it may look a litte bigger is because of the adaptor. When I bought my camera my next choice was the Kyocera 10 x optical camera.
I will keep thinking of any others and let you know, you should have a look here. http://www.dpreview.com/

When the camera is off, the lens on the Fuji is huge, probably a good inch or so bigger than a Z5.
